🌿 Why Did I Get Sick… After Feeling So Healthy? (And What It Taught Me About Healing in Real Life)
A few weeks ago, after a long stretch of feeling healthy and stable, I came down with Pertussis.
And I’ll be honest… it surprised me.
I hadn’t been sick in over a year. My body had felt stronger, more consistent, and more resilient than it had in a long time.
So naturally, the question came up:
Did I do something wrong?
Is my immune system struggling again?
But when I took a step back and looked at the bigger picture, what I saw wasn’t failure.
It was context.
Taking moments to reflect can sometimes reveal the unexpected.
🌿 Healing Isn’t Linear—It’s a Dance
Healing doesn’t move in a straight line.
It’s more like a dance.
Sometimes you move forward with ease.
Sometimes you step back, pause, or shift direction.
But you’re still in motion.
You’re still learning the rhythm of your body.
And over time, that rhythm becomes:
- more intuitive
- more supported
- more resilient
🌿 When Healing Meets Real Life
Healing doesn’t happen in isolation forever.
At some point, you begin to:
- re-enter the world
- connect with more people
- take on more responsibility
- expand your life again
And this is where a new layer begins.
Not because something is wrong—
but because your body is learning to hold stability in a more dynamic environment.
Around the time I got sick, I had just gone through an extremely stressful experience. My apartment flooded, and I had to move out within 48 hours. At the same time, I was preparing for social events for work and suddenly interacting with far more people than I had in years.
That kind of shift matters.
So rather than seeing this as:
“My body failed me,”
I now understand it more like:
“My body encountered a higher level of exposure during a moment when it was already carrying more.”
There was a moment where everything felt heavy—
my body, my chest, my thoughts.
Getting sick again brought up more than symptoms.
My body felt heavy.
My heart did too.
But I’ve learned…
there’s always another way to hold the moment. 🤍
The Bright Side: Your Body Is Always Learning
There’s also something important—and encouraging—to understand here. When your body moves through something like Pertussis, it’s not just “getting through” the illness.
It’s adapting.
Your immune system is intelligent and responsive. Experiences like this can strengthen how your body recognizes and responds in the future.
So rather than seeing this as a setback…
You might gently consider:
This may have been a moment that strengthened your system.
Not because we seek out illness—
but because the body is always learning.
I find journaling or talking to a trusted coach or or even AI can help me see the bigger picture
🌿 When Safety Becomes Isolation
For many people who have been chronically ill, isolation wasn’t a choice—it was a necessity.
There may have been a time when:
- being around others felt overwhelming
- your energy was limited
- or your body simply couldn’t tolerate much interaction
So you adapted. I know I did.
You created a smaller, more controlled world.
And that made sense. It helped you get through.
But over time, what once supported your survival
can begin to quietly limit your expansion.
Because human beings aren’t meant to live in isolation.
We are wired for connection, shared experiences, and being seen.
A Truth to Hold Onto
“Healing rarely happens in isolation. While it may feel safer to do it alone, the body is wired for connection. Support, community, and feeling seen are often the very things that allow it to finally begin.”
— Rachel (El) Sellers
🌿 The Fear of Re-Entering Life
As you begin to feel better, a new layer can emerge.
Not just physical—but emotional.
Questions like:
- What if I get sick again?
- What if my body can’t handle it?
- What if I’m down for too long?
So even as your body improves… part of you may still feel safer holding back. And that’s understandable.
But it’s not the whole story.
🌿 Learning to Trust Yourself Again
Some days look like stillness.
Some days look like movement.
Both are part of healing.
Healing isn’t about jumping back into everything all at once. And it’s not about staying where you were at your most limited. It’s about rebuilding trust with your body.
Letting your system learn:
- you can go out
- you can engage
- you can recover
Even if it’s not perfect every time.
🌿 Learning to Make Supportive Choices
As you re-engage with life, another layer of healing emerges:
Discernment. Healing isn’t just about doing more.
It’s about doing what’s aligned with where your body is in that moment. I got a little over zealous. I had been feeling strong, capable and a little invincible! Which none of us are.
When I had that feeling I was pushing too hard for what all I was going through, I should have listened. But testing boundaries and learning from over stepping our current boundaries are part of learning and growing.
There’s a difference between:
- avoiding life out of fear and
- making supportive choices
Sometimes that means:
- going out and connecting
And sometimes that means:
- resting
- keeping things simple
- or not pushing yourself into high-stimulation environments during already stressful seasons (umm hello!)
Not because you’re fragile—but because you’re human and you’re listening.
🌿 This Is the Dance
Healing isn’t a straight line.
It’s a quiet returning…
a soft unfolding…
a dance your body is learning one step at a time.
This is what “Healing Happens in Layers” really means.
And also…
Healing happens in movement.
In rhythm.
In real life.
Not in a straight line.
🌿 A Gentle Reminder
You are not back at the beginning (even though you may feel that way).
You are not failing.
You are simply in a new layer.
And your body is learning how to move with you—one step at a time.
Even here… you are still in the dance.
And if a moment like this has ever felt overwhelming for you, you’re not alone.
Maybe you can gently ask:
What is this moment showing me?
And how can I support myself as I move through it?
If you’ve had a realization around this in your own journey, I’d love for you to share it in the comments. 🤍
